Heading back to school is a big change for everyone, especially for busy moms. Between adjusting to new schedules, school drop-offs and pickups, and the start of fall sports, it’s easy for your home to feel a little chaotic. This time of year can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. Getting a handle on the clutter now can make the rest of the year feel a lot smoother.
Here are a few quick tips to help you reset your home and your mind this back-to-school season:
1. The 15-Minute Daily Tidy
Instead of waiting for the weekend to do a big clean, try setting aside just 15 minutes each day. Put on some music, set a timer, and have everyone in the family tackle a specific area. To make this even easier, create a set of notecards with basic tasks like “wipe down the kitchen table,” “vacuum the living room,” or “tidy up the blankets and pillows.” This way, you can simply hand out a card instead of trying to figure out what to assign everyone in the heat of the moment. These small, consistent efforts prevent clutter from piling up and make a huge difference over time.
2. Create a “Launch Pad”
Designate a specific spot near your entryway for all things school and sports. Use hooks for backpacks and jackets, a small bench or basket for shoes, and a bin for sports equipment. This helps prevent items from getting lost and keeps the floor clear. It also makes it easier for everyone to grab what they need on their way out the door. If you don’t have enough space in your entryway, you can create a mini launch pad in each family member’s room using hooks on the back of the door or a designated shelf in their closet.
3. Tackle the Paper Pile
School papers and artwork can quickly take over your kitchen counter. It’s best to deal with incoming papers as quickly as possible. Have a folder for papers that need your attention, where your kids can put anything they want you to see or need you to sign. Set a specific time each day or week to review this folder.
Empower your kids to be in charge of their own incoming papers. Have a spot where they can display and store the work they are proud of, and help them decide what is worth keeping and what can be tossed. It’s important to provide a designated space so you set a limit on how much can be kept, preventing the pile from getting out of control.
Remember, you don’t have to do it all at once. Even small steps toward an organized home can reduce stress and help you enjoy this new season with your family.
